    From the most famous and best preserved ancient Greek cities of Crete. It was built by the Dorians in the 7th century BC. Flourished from the 4th to the 2nd century BC and was one of the most powerful cities in Crete. It's just 3 km from Kritsa and is built on a saddle fortress with spectacular view to the bay of Mirabello. It took its name from the goddess Leto mother of Apollo and Artemis. It had its own state, currency and calendar, and its seaport was the Kamara, the current St. Nicholas. It is considered the birthplace of Nearchos, the great admiral and explorer of Alexander the Great.



    The most famous island of Crete, rock and fortress of the S.W. entrance of the lagoon of Elounda. The castle was built during the Venetian occupation by existing building materials from an ancient fortress. It was founded in 1579. From 1669 until 1715 was a refuge of Venetians, Hainides and criminals. After that was inhabited almost exclusively by Muslims until fleeing in 1903 the last inhabitants, when converted into leper colony by decision of the Cretan State. In 1957 it stopped functioning, and since then remained uninhabited. Public buildings, homes and walls restored and reconstruct the history of the island and pass the volume of its adventures. Visitors experience the history and enjoy the stunning beauty of the fortress, the island and the whole landscape.


    Panagia Kera

    The most famous Byzantine monument of Crete (13th-14th cent.) is located in Logari, 1 km east of Kritsa. The Byzantine church is dedicated to Virgin Mary, to Saint Anthony and Saint Anne. The area of the church is decorated with frescoes of exceptional art and particular themes by the middle of the 13th century.


    St. Nicholas Church

    At the north side of the city (Agios Nikolaos), on top of a small peninsula, is located the church of St. Nicholas, a typical example of the early-Byzantine architecture, by which was named after the town of Agios Nikolaos. It was built in the 7th-9th century during the period of iconoclasm. In the church there are scattered remains of the original paintings with abstract topics, while elsewhere are preserved frescoes from newer layers of painting from the early 14th century.


    Panagia Vrefotrofos

    It's located in the center of Agios Nikolaos. The original building is from the 12th century. The interior decor has remarkable frescoes from the 13th and 14th century. At the entrance there is a construction of funerary monument that according to an engraved inscription, dated in 1602, belonged to Castellano de Mirabello.


    St. John the Theologian

    It's located just two klms from Kritsa on the way to Krousta. The foundation of the monastery dates back to 1211. It is, according to experts, the most important monument of ecclesiastical architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries, with three parallel aisles and a western cross, built up successively until the 18th century.


    "Ancient" and nature walks

    You can walk on the same old medieval road that led from Naples in Laconia and plains of Kritsa and from there to Kalo Horio and Ierapetra. It's the same ancient route and in some places (Lato, Anegyrides) is preserved the ancient road. You can follow the same old path, that brought hundreds of years, the inhabitants of Kritsa in Katharo, that passes in many places through the pitch-black forest. The path with the alternating images is unprecedented. If you want to live the wilderness you have only to walk the same path that took the Minoans and through the ancient forest of cedars, to get on Katharo and from there to Lasithi.


    Plateau Katharos

    For the lovers of the mountain, the dense vegetation and the bare rock, the visit to the Plateau Katharous is essential. 16 km west of Kritsa at an altitude of 1,150 meters, there are 60,000 acres stretching plains, growing cereals, vegetables, vines and fruit trees. Thousands of sheep reared on the slopes and give excellent quality milk products. It is a paradise for nature lovers and an ideal place for hiking. Katharo shows, also, particular scientific interest, as found by researchers the existence of fossils of dwarf elephants and hippopotami.



    Immerse yourself in the endless blue. Laughter, joy, relaxation, games in the sand, smell the iodine of the sea mixed with the brine from the sea. There are beaches awarded with Blue Flag from those in the city to until the remote ones.

    * "EOT Beach": The only mini golf of the area, water sports, food, billiards, tennis, next to soccer and basketball courts, stadium and swimming pool are available.

    * "Ammos: Located in the center of Agios Nikolaos, ideal for diving and watersports, adjacent to the central shopping areas.

    * "Kitroplatia" Another beautiful beach in the city center and surrounded by restaurants and hotels.

    * "Ammoudi" Small well-organized beach, ideal for enjoyable swimming and fun in the sand.

    * "Xavania": The coast road to Elounda leads to an organized beach, with all the beach facilities.

    * "Ammoudara" Small well-organized beach, ideal for swimming and water sports.

    * "Almyros" South of Agios Nikolaos, at the 2nd km of the road to Kalo Chorio. One of the most important wetlands in our country. The whole area is full of towering eucalyptus trees, reeds and rushes that grow in the springs. The beach Almyros is magnificent and the visitor can enjoy the comforts of perfectly organized beach.


    Beaches in Elounda

    Visitors can enjoy the sea while experiencing a swim in the crystal clear waters of the beaches of Elounda, nine of them are awarded annually by the European Union. Right next to the harbor is the municipal beach, a well-organized beach, ideal for water sports, with restaurants and cafes nearby, bringing together thousands of visitors each year. At the east of Skisma, at 800 meters there are the award-winning beaches of Hionia and Poros. Another beach for swimming is the one of hotel Driros, overgrown with trees and two pebble beaches of Plaka with its crystal clear waters, Agia Marina and the beach located at the edge of town. With the car and leaving the channel through the dirt road will take you near the church of St. Luke. From there descend on foot to reach the beach of Kolokitha with green water.


    Beaches in Kalo Chorio

    Karavostasi: Well-organized public beach for swimming and fun in the sand. Located just before entering the village and is surrounded by trees, carob and olive trees.

    Agios Panteleimon: In the center of Kalo Horio is the beautiful beach of Agios Panteleimon. Fascinating, organized public beach, ideal for relaxation and entertainment and meeting place for lovers of windsurfing. It is surrounded by reeds and eucalyptus trees and at its sand dunes grows the indigenous Minoan Lily of the sea.

    Boulisma: The largest public beach of Kalo Chorio. Endless clean sand for lovers of relaxation and fun in the sand. Surrounded by restaurants, cafes and supermarkets, each year brings thousands of visitors. Ideal beach for watersports and fun in the sand.
